B2B Marketing; Website Designer or Internet Marketer?

Hello, my name is Gary Holt of Holt Marketing and Management, located in Saginaw, MI. Like many other parts of the country, Michigan has been hit hard with one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. We are looking for effective ways to communicate with our current and future customer base. That quest has led to the development of my blog.

This is the first post to what I plan to be a solid resource for entrepreneurs and business owners working to navigate the worst economy in over 40 years.  In our first post, I would like to share what we have learned about website development.

Getting things done! Sometimes we have to wait and wait to get projects done. I especially get impatient when it involves my own projects. That is one of the most frustrating parts of being a business owner. But even though I stay on top of the latest business marketing strategies, I am still learning each and every day.

One of the projects I have been working on for months is the re-design and implementation of our new e-commerce website at Holt Marketing and Management. We finally went live this week, but I must admit, even though we are a leading b2b marketing company I knew my own site was not ready to provide leads even before we went live.

What did we learn from our own effort?

The core learning point from the whole process is that there is a big difference between a Web Designer and an Internet Marketer. Viewing the site from a technical and design perspective, it is awesome, great color, good design, flows well, loads fast which are all important aspects.  I wanted another opinion from the perspective of an online marketer and they reported the following:

  1. The site isn’t keyword optimized.
  2. I didn’t have a blog (Changing that today!)
  3. Not enough pages
  4. No meta descriptions
  5. No integration with social media

What did we learn from our own effort?

We have learned that you need to have both the technical side and the marketing side when developing and implementing website marketing. Even though I have been in the Marketing business for over 25 years, we had to learn that the hard way. I now have my own online marketing experts.

2011 Ford ExplorerWhen such companies as the Ford Motor Company introduce the 2011 Ford Explorer on Facebook instead of the “traditional” auto show roll out, you have to pay attention. The big companies are moving to more online marketing and engaging customers through social media.

Why is Ford daring to be different? Because they see the trend of where the Internet and social media are having on selling vehicles and it is clearly going online, not off line.

As I discuss in my book, The Perpetual Money Machine, there is no better time to invest in your business. Download a section from Chapter 4 from my book. Chapter 4 is called, “Make more money investing in your business.” I will show you how an investment in your business performs much better than the stock market or real estate. I wrote this book even BEFORE things went really bad, so it is especially relevant today.

So if you’re looking for a great investment, look at your own website. Your website is your future. If you decide to invest in your website, email me at We can provide a free website analysis and show you how to make the most of your investment.
